EXTRAD, Japanese Noh & Kyōgen Theatre

EXTRAD is a performance company dedicated to sharing the classical Japanese performing arts of Noh and Kyōgen with contemporary audiences.

Rooted in centuries-old traditions, our work honors the original forms while creating spaces for meaningful cultural exchange in the present day.

Through carefully staged performances, lectures, and workshops, EXTRAD introduces the elegance, humor, and depth of Nohgaku—the combined tradition of Noh and Kyōgen. Using stylized movement, masks, music, and language, we invite audiences to experience an art form that values stillness, timing, and suggestion, revealing both the uniqueness of Japanese culture and the universal nature of human expression.

Working in collaboration with cultural institutions and educational organizations, we aim to make Nohgaku accessible, thoughtful, and relevant across cultures and generations.

Munenori Takeda | International Outreach

Takeda Munenori is a Noh performer who serves as a key point of contact for the international presentation and dissemination of Nohgaku.

With extensive experience performing abroad, he has worked to introduce Noh and Kyōgen to diverse audiences through collaborations with theaters, cultural institutions, and artists worldwide.

Among his representative works is the 2014 Seattle production Tomoe & Yoshinaka, a successful double program pairing traditional Noh with contemporary opera. In addition to Seattle, he has presented Nohgaku in international settings including Edinburgh and Hawai‘i, contributing to cross-cultural dialogue through performance.

Through these activities, Takeda continues to play an essential role in facilitating overseas performances and fostering deeper understanding of Nohgaku beyond Japan.
